Bent Wheel And Discs

By Stephen Latchford

December 2015

I turned my attention to the front brake because there was way too much travel on the lever. All sorts of things could be wrong here but as it turned out it looked like it was just a brake disc being badly bent in the crash. This was causing the brake pistons in the calliper to be pushed apart, about 13 mm apart actually, pretty bad. I took off the left brake calliper, jacked up the front and spun the wheel to see how bad things were.

Well not only was the left hand disc bent but the wheel had sustained damage as well. Yep it had two small dings in the right hand rim. I was gutted. Worst of all I could see evidence of a touch up job to conceal the damage, that was naughty of RS Motorcycles to mislead me. A look on eBay didn't help as there was nothing listed second hand at all and a new wheel was going to cost £385 plus the dreaded vat. Discs would be over £500. Moments like this really get you down in the doldrums and you almost regret what you have got yourself into.

I took a small vid for you to see.

Fortunately it was not the end of the world and there are experts out there who can help. Thanks again to the wonders of the net I came across these guys, http://www.motoliner.com/motorcycle-wheel-straightening.php.

On a Monday afternoon I sent my wheel and both discs off on overnight carriers. Tuesday morning I got a call from George at Maidstone Motoliner, he was having a little chuckle at the state of my wheel and discs and said they would try their best and call me back when they had. They did call me 4 hours later and said they had done the lot, and to be careful with the wheel as it is a delicate item compared to standard alloys and even tyre fitting can buckle them. I paid them the £159 inc vat and delivery, a big saving on new parts. As promised they arrived the next day and I just had to give them a spin to see how they did.

Here is what I was presented with, a superb job indeed.

After carefully refitting the front tyre and discs and refitting them back onto the bike, I pumped the brake lever which became solid quite soon, sorted!

Buying The Bent Bike Stephen receives his broken and bent Striple RX and starts the process of fixing that which can be fixed and replacing the rest. It's not all plain sailing.
Sorting The Rear End Stephen does battle with the rear end of the Street Triple RX. There's drills, there's new and used parts and there's a steep learning curve about how it all fits together
Panels And Paint Stephen's attention has now turned to sorting out the pretty bits. The mudgaurd needs a repair and paint, the Daytona rear panels are the wrong colour and no-one stocks the right colour!
Bent Wheel And Discs Stephen is absolutely mortified to find out the front wheel and left hand disc are bent due to the accident. This could get expensive, REAL expensive. Luckily Stephen found expert help.
The Finishing Touches Stephen's on the home stretch now with the Street Triple RX salvage operation. There's some images of the completed bike looking pristine and perfect.
