Camping In Scotland 2006 - Homeward Bound
As ever I am up early, but today I manage to settle back to some more sleep and get up at an acceptable time. Today we are for home, but the gf is not ready to go back. I shower, we pack and by 11am we are ready to go. With a now familiar wobble we set off and flow with the traffic back onto the roads leading home. It’s not long before we are at Rivington drinking tea and relaying parts of our story to our friends.
It's time to pack this away now and go home....urgh...
We’ve been lucky this week I guess. The weather has held off, grey with the odd showers at first, but not enough to get wet and by the end of the trip I gained a little sunburn. We’ve learnt what we would like from a campsite, seen some awesome, truly “breathtaking” scenery, the bike has behaved impeccably and we have enjoyed the trip. Scotland is a cool place to go, especially on a bike.
The one big complaint is the cost of eating out on the road. The smarter cafes and restaurants can cost upwards of £10 a meal, some cost over £20, snacks and light lunches at about £7 for two. This all adds up, food being the largest part of the cost of the trip. It is my plan to work out a menu that can be easily purchased from most stores and cooked in a billy can on a small stove. Campsites can be very hit and miss. It was not my plan to research and set in stone a list of campsites, I wanted the freedom to come and go as we pleased. But the downside is the difficulty in finding suitable sites. Evening entertainment and food being the main issue.
Time is the other issue. There is just too much to see and so many miles to travel. It would take a month to cover the basics of Scotland and maybe 3 months to really have a good look. I have neither the resources nor the time to do this. I often dream of travelling to far flung destinations, yet only 300 miles north of my home lies this huge expanse of land and islands still waiting to be discovered.

Enjoyed reading about your Scottish trip. I'm sitting in work at the moment, and it's cold and miserable outside, but I know the weather will pick up soon and reading this has brightened the day. I live near Loch Lomond, so know all the areas you visited very well. You've just put me in the mood to get my tent looked out and get on the bike and go.

I did Scotland a couple of years ago on my Royal Enfield lots of rain all the way from Gretna to fort William then on and off for week,I didn't camp but I might try it next time,,reading about your trip made me want to do it sll over again ..

Cheers Michael! Eeee by 'eck that wur a long time ago! If you read around the site you'll see we've been to Scotland many times and with many various weather conditions.
It's a hell of a place and I'm hoping to return next year. Let us know if you're going back.
