More Speed Limit Confusion

Blog Date - 26 November 2016

In a recent post I called for clearer speed limits signage (Clear Speed Signage Please). I have put together a video to demonstrate what I mean.

Many thanks to Bolton Council and/or Middlebrook Retail Park for providing me with such a perfect example of poor speed signage. Confusion reigns supreme.

I feel your confusion.....

A few points. Pocketpete will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that all roads with lampposts closer than 200 yards (which all those are) have a default limit of 30 mph. And according to this link: http://www.rospa.com/road-safety/advice/drivers/speed/top-ten-tips-to-stay-within-the-limit/lamp-posts/, 30 mph repeaters are not allowed to be fixed to lampposts. So if there are no repeaters it's 30 mph.

However, I've just found this: http://www.roadsafetygb.org.uk/news/5013.html which seems to blow the above out of the water. Bloody Tory government......

OTOH, I do not believe that repeater signs are valid UNLESS they are preceded by a full-size speed limit sign.

I think it is perfectly possible for the different directions of a dual carriageway to have different limits. One side may have lots of turnings whereas the other may be clear.

I don't think I've made anything any clearer.......

ps I have just downloaded the 2016 regulations but at over 500 pages have no intention of reading it any time soon.

In a world where the government is actually discouraging councils from putting up additional 20 signs as a reminder I can start to believe the conspiracy theorists. Is this an Orwellian plot to criminalise the populous by making sure we cannot follow the law? I'm starting to sound like a tin foil hat wearing paranoid movie character.

Are "they" really out to get me?

Great links, thanks Ian.

I just think they're pandering to the jeremy clarkson / daily mail lobby then getting the civil servants to dress it up in impenetrable language.

All to divert our attention from impending doom.....

Which impending doom Ian? There's too many to list.

Take your pick - Brexit, a Trump presidency, the fact that so many people were taken in (in both cases) by downright lies, systematic dismantling of our public services, climate change......

One of the advantages of being of more advanced years is that (hopefully) I won't be around to see the worst effects.

Good heavens I feel positively miserable now Ian. I'm desperately clinging to the hope that it has to get worse before it gets better. In the mean time...
