AGV K3 SV Pivot Click (Pt 1)

Blog Date - 19 February 2016

AAAARRGH!

AGV, one of the biggest helmet brands. As such you'd think getting spares for a current AGV model would be simple wouldn't you? Pffffft. I'm guessing you came here from a web search probably because you're having the same trouble as I am. So let me tell you the stuff you want to know first.

Google this - "KIT08601999" and "AGV 21000182" and "AGV GT2 CLICK" - That's as best I can help you really. Good luck.

The Story.

I purchased a brand new AGV K3 SV in September 2015 and I have been perfectly satisfied with it. The pinlock works a treat in eliminating fog, the sun visor does it's thing and all is well. That was until a cold and frosty evening ride home from work. I noticed when I pushed my visor up there was a rather horrid "CLICK" from the visor mounting mechanism. Upon inspection a tiny little piece of plastic had snapped, probably due to mis-manufacture and the biting cold.

The small piece of broken plastic from the AGV visor click ratchet mechanismGRRRR! Ya little bleeder.

It is but there merest piece of plastic. It has ridges in it that correspond to ridges in the visor to give several holding positions on the visor, as do most helmets. No problem thinks I, I shall simply find a replacement and pop it in there. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

The small piece of plastic circled on the helmet's base plateIt just pops out, easy swap.

Bolton Motorcycles, AGV stockist. After much head scratching while looking at a screen I was finally told that I could order a pair for £15, it may take a week. What? £15 for that tiny piece of plastic? For goodness sake. Thank you folks for looking hard, not giving up and I do understand the price is not your fault.

Shorrocks Preston, AGV Stockist. Again after much head scratching and a phone call to AGV's UK distributors (Moto-Direct.com) I was told £15 and it may take a week. Once again thank you for your efforts and for not dismissing me with a "Dunno mate" attitude.

Preston Superbike, No AGV's in stock at the time of my visit. However they still made a call to Millenium motorcycles who "don't have anything like that in stock". Beyond this they also called AGV's distributor. It seems the tiny bit of plastic is available in a kit. Within the kit are 6 little pieces, the red ones just like mine, green ones with the clicks in different places and blue ones without clicks, just friction. That kit ought to be £10 UK RRP. Part number 21000182. Thanks once more for your efforts.

In fact it seems there's some confusion. I SUSPECT, but I do not know, that £15 buys me 2 whole visor mounting base plates, hopefully with the bit of plastic I need, £10 buys me 6 bits of plastic with 3 types of positioning. I am GUESSING...I do not KNOW this as a fact.

The 3 options for the clickers
What I suspect are the 3 optional "Click" mechanisms. Just one would do thank you.

J&S Preston, AGV stockist also told me they could order parts in but again it would be "a week, maybe less". I didn't bother to ask the price, I already knew.

So it seems that AGV stockists don't hold parts for their AGV helmets. That's a shame but perhaps these things never usually break. Meh, Ebay will have some that will be here by Monday - surely (don't call me Shirley). American Ebay does but they certainly won't get here by Monday!. UK Ebay doesn't. Not only can I not get the little bits of plastic from a UK based seller but I can't even get the whole side/mounting/base plate either. Amazon reckons they can get me some and so does sportsbikeshop.co.uk. BUT this only works if you suggest your helmet is the Skyline or Horizon helmet.

Oh look I've had enough of this already. I've placed my order and I shall wait and see what happens. COME ON AGV! Get you poop together and put a website up that lists clearly ALL the teeny weeny little bits and pieces that UK customers might want. At least provide them with a part number to order from AGV stockists if not an actual online shop.

Bummer...i've got an AGV, what'll I do when/if it pops a plastic type bit? £10.00 seems a bit steep, to say the least! Hope it all works out Ren...maybe let us all know...a sort of AGV plastic bit guinea pig...if you'll pardon the expression! Mind you I did recently purchase an Arai Rebel Chronus helmet which is actually not only comfortable but doesn't do that much 'wiggling' at higher speeds...70mph.. obviously no higher!!All the best with your AGV mate.

I must be really tight, I'd be tempted to pin it with a dress makers pin and a drop of glue.

Hi Tony. I have tried to glue it but that didn't work. The pin idea is sound but when I observe the one that's not broken there's quite a bit of "designed in" deformation in the plastic. I suspect the pin wouldn't be flexible enough.

But now you've got me thinking...what about that piece of flexible lock-wire I have lying around....hmmmm....

Ren, just as an experiment, try welding it where its broken with a soldering iron.see if you can melt the two edges together. Practice on sumert first though to get an idea of what to do.

It s funny you pay a fortune for a decent quality helmet and yet they have parts which are very poorly engineered yet not many people complain to much.

I have had a couple of agv and arai helemts and I have had similar problems in the past. when I was getting back into biking I thought it wise to chuck my old 17 years old helmet out and get a new one. My mate who is still on the GMP bike squad thought the shoe neotecs were good but he had just been given a new schuberth helmet which he felt was more comfortable.

I opted for the schuberth as my local bike shop was a schuberth dealer and I got the C3 pro European as it was the only flip up on he had I wear glasses so this helmet is ideal as its easy to put on and off without having to take off the glasses.

I parted with £ 500 and I now have a very nice helmet. I then purchased the built in intercom kit a further £ 200.

On fitting the kit I broke the retaining pin for the neck roll a tiny piece of plastic which locks the neck roll into the front of the helmet. A quick search online and everyone keeps breaking them. So much for German engineering.

A quick search and I was then replacing the pin with a bit of wire rod.

http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-helmets/schuberth-neck-roll-pin-fix/

The pins are available from the dealer at £ 4.99 a pair. These are now free due to so many breaking.....

The helmet has a pinlock visor fitted as standard. When I was drenched in the last monsoon a few weeks ago the visor was steaming up and dripping in water to the point I couldnt see... I checked the helmet but could see no place the water was getting in.

A search online revealed the pin lock is bent under pressure and causes the visor to flex slightly letting water drip down the inside. Solution remove pinlock and hey presto no leaks...

Visor ratchet not holding the visor up at any speed above 30mph. At which point the visor slams down...

Search online revealed a new ratchet assembly is available £ 16.00 which is modified slightly to stop this. I ordered and replaced this and cured the problem.

So £ 500 and three separate problems later my helmet now works as intended and i thought Germans were good at engineering this sort of thing.. Would we put up with any other item worth £ 500 breaking like this especially when its a safety / mandatory item.

It's madness ain't it Pocketpete! Considering helmets have been law in the UK for 40 something years you'd think we'd have ironed out the creases by now. Especially on what are considered "quality" helmets.

Start a REVOLUTION! Bring back steel screws holding on wobbly pieces of plastic. They didn't work very well and you could barely see through them but they didn't break...

Ho Paul, glad it's not just me! You'd think a company like AGV would be able to
a) test to ensure this isn't going to be a problem before going into production
b) get the spares out there so they're cheap and easily accessible.
