Time To Think About Booking My DAS

Blog date Sept 2015

I finally found out in September that  I was lucky enough to secure my own job for another 6 months. I have had to reapply for my job every year for 4 years now and I have began to slowly learn to be a little less stressed each time but the process is gruelling. Seeing your friends crying and in distress when they have been told that they have not secured a post is not easy at all. Thanks to yearly Government cutbacks this is life now if you work for the Council.

So because life is so uncertain I knew I had to grab my chance to go for my full licence. I knew I had a job for the next few months. I had already passed my theory test (Motorcycle Theory Test)and I had finally found a training school with a bike low enough for me to actually ride. Wigan Rider Training had a new fleet of MT07's two of which had been lowered enough for those who like me are vertically challenged.  I had already sat on one of their lowered bike and felt comfortable with how it felt both height and weight wise. They had both a restricted and an unrestricted lowered bike so if I passed on the unrestricted one I could secure myself a full A licence. So it was all good to go really, I just needed the courage to phone and book in my first lesson. Gulp...

I pop into Wigan and have a quick assessment on my own 125cc bike with their instructor Steve. I do a few manoeuvres on the pad and Steve says he is confident that a 3 day DAS course would be fine as I am clearly an experienced rider and take instructions well. I am surprised he thinks I am even remotely able because I feel sick being watched and really nervous. A 3 day course seems scary to me, surely I could not be ready in that short a time? After all it is not like 3 full days training. It is literally 1 full day training and then day 2 would be mod 1 and day 2 mod 2. I tell him I am unsure and Steve says I can do 4 days if I want but he is sure once I get started I will find 3 is enough. I go away to have a think and procrastinate some more.

I do want to do this but I am bloody terrified. I HATE  being watched, I hate being assessed. My nerves just kick in and it is just not an enjoyable experience for me what so ever. BUT I really want my licence, sooooo I am just going to have to girl up and book myself in.

I phone the training school and discuss options with Lynda. I now work nearly every day with only Wednesdays off mid week. I do not have any leave left so I am going to have to do weekly lessons rather than a 3 day block. I do not want a full day to start with either because I know I am going to be stressed. So we finally work out the following plan for me...

Wed 23rd Sept - First lesson - Half day
Wed 30th Sept - Second lesson - Half day
Wed 14th Oct - Mod 1 - Full day - 12.25 test at St Helens
Wed 21st Oct - Mod 2 - Full day - 12.17 test at Atherton

I was still unsure if 3 days would be enough to secure myself a full licence. Lynda assured me that if at any time Steve felt I was not ready then I would not be put in for a test. The test date would be cancelled and I would be given more training. So no need to worry. Worry...meee...WORRY...? I am way past worrying and into the sheer terror zone.

Well this is it, terror or not I have done the deed. I am booked in...Arghhhh!
