CBF 125 Interchangeable Foot Rest Rubbers

Blog Date - 12 November 2013

My little CBF 125 only had 5,700 miles on it when I purchased it. This last 14 months I've run that up to 18,500 miles and the left hand rider's foot rest is already starting to wear out! This has surprised me a little, I've had bikes with much higher mileages with rubbers that have been worn but not like this. I guess there's 2 reasons.

It's worn, I want to change it before it's worn out.

First off this model was made in India, I have read somewhere later ones are from Thailand. Whilst it is a genuine bona-fide Honda it's Indian origins do show through from time to time. Some finishes are thin, the engine internals are coarse and certain nuts and bolts lack that "quality" feel. It's not beyond the realms of possibility then that the rubber used in the foot rests is perhaps slightly sub-standard too.

Secondly it is a 125  and 125's typically require some serious gear box stirring. Add to that my regular commute through towns and traffic and even the most determined rubber is going to see some action. Perhaps my orthotic boot adds to the complications too.

So I'm looking at my worn rubber and wondering what to do. A search on the interweb suggests a brand new Honda rubber will only cost around £14. It's hardly a disaster is it, it's less than the cost of a full tank of fuel. Whilst looking at the exploded diagram of the "Step" system as the foot rests are described I notice that all four "step" rubbers have the same part number. I bet they heard the penny drop in the next street.

Honda in their infinite wisdom fitted the CBF 125 with spares! Well...no not really but all the rubbers, left, right, rider and pillion, are all the same. The metal pins that support the rubbers are different left to right but the same for rider and pillion too. Super! It's obviously a cost saving exercise but it's damn convenient for me.

As the rubber only wears at the front I decide to swap the rider's rubbers over. I shall save the pillion rubbers for later when I wear this one out too. It's a simple job to undo the 10 mm bolt on each side, swap the rubbers and bolt them back up. It doesn't happen that things go my way very often but when it does it pleases me no end.

Oooooh...that's better!

The worn rubber is now on the opposite side, the worn section is in a place where it will wear no more.
