Car Drivers...They're Not All Bad

Blog Date - 12 September 2012

I was traveling down the motorway on my 125, maintaining a steady 55 to 60 mph, a perfectly acceptable speed.  However an Audi driver decided this was not enough and took it upon himself to pass me on the left, making partial use of the hard shoulder.  An unusual choice of maneuver especially as the correct overtaking lanes would have been available in a further 50 yards, or a matter of seconds.  This of course left me cursing most profusely in my helmet, espousing my frustration and naming all people who choose 4 wheeled transport as the offspring of Satan himself.

After a few more moments...well...maybe a few more miles...I calmed a little and it's then a thought struck me.  Traveling at these speeds for the last 30 miles I have been passed by maybe a thousand cars already.  Of those thousand cars all but one has passed me in the correct and safe manner.  Many have been considerate and respectful enough to wait behind me for the correct and safe traffic circumstances to arise before making their overtake.  The point is that the vast majority of car drivers are reasonable people trying to get somewhere much the same as myself.  They make mistakes, as do I and sometimes things go wrong.  But in the main considering how many vehicles are on our congested roads, it's a miracle that anyone gets anywhere in one piece.

There are some complete plonkers out there.  You cannot consider undertaking and making use of the hard shoulder a "mistake".  Using a mobile phone while driving is a conscious decision not a faux pas.  Most motorcyclists agree the best course of action is to treat everyone as though they're out to kill you.  It's good advice, but once in a while take a moment to notice how many of them have noticed you

Are you absolutely sure the driver did this by mistake or intentionally? what if he was fiddling around with his radio, or reading a text and suddenly looked up and saw you and in doing so decided to avoid you by swinging the car to the left instead of the right into the second lane.
Also, if he only had to make partial use of the hard shoulder, you must have been quite far over to the right in the first lane.

Any way, another journey survived.
