A Review On The Bajaj Avenger 220cc DTSi - By Arjun Uberoi
The Bajaj Avenger 220cc DTSI or the name I have given my Avenger “The Blue Stallion” truly justifies its tag line “Feels like God”, it is seriously a divine cruiser. Even the advertisement for the Bajaj Avenger 220cc DTSI sends shivers down your spine. It gives an instant feeling of freedom and gist of letting go all the troubles and pressures of life. I have personally seen the advertisement Xellion times or even more. It has grown and groomed since its inception on the road. It has reframed its name as well as its engine, from Eliminator to Avenger and from 180cc to 200cc to finally the present a 220cc engine . If you like Cruising, Power, Speed, Pleasure, Attention, Style, Confidence, Comfort then the Bajaj Avenger is your kind of Bike. The USP of the bike is its comfort and ease of riding. Just to give you a example, I never had ridden a bike before in my life. All of a sudden I got this irking bone in my body for biking and riding on highways for miles and miles. After going through some of the bikes my instincts froze on the Bajaj Avenger 220cc DTSi. I walked into the showroom and brought out a machine I never knew how to handle. I don’t know was it me riding the bike or the bike giving me a ride. Whatever it was I cruised it from the showroom in Chandigarh directly to Gurgaon covering a distance of 290 kilometers. Now this explains it all, a person who doesn’t know how to even ride a bike brought home a brand new Avenger, this justifies my statement about the USP of the bike.
The riding posture of the bike makes you feel like a king on his throne. Its bucket seat for the rider is equipped with dual foam density; it’s like a bean bag on wheels. Even better is the seat for the pillion rider. Its got the right dimensions with a perfect back rest.
Ren - The Ed, The Images Arjun has sent me are amazing - I'm so jealous
Now technically the bike is equipped with a 4 Stroke, single cylinder, DTS-i, air cooled with oil cooler. Its piston gives a displacement of 219.89 to be accurate. It pumps out a maximum power (ps@rpm) of 19.03@8400 including a maximum torque (Nm @ rpm) of 17.5@7000. All this gives peak riding pleasure on the highway. Trust me having completed 10000 kilometers on my 115 days old Avenger , truly speaks about the addictive pleasure it gives while riding it on the long straight black tar. “It’s Born To Be Wild”. The Avenger can take you to speeds upto 130 kilometers per hour but that’s like really stressing out your engine. As its quite a racket when at that speed. Riding at 110 kilometers per hour is smooth, it glides at this speed or literally cruises between 100kmph and 110kmph, and it’s usually my personal favorite.
Talking about its confidence the Avenger comes without a kickstart, the electric start never has failed in my bike even in the coldest of the regions like the khardungla pass, world’s highest motorable road while snowing. It has got a DC ignition system. It really starts easily due to low start RPM and also the cold startability is flawless. It is powered with a battery of 12V, 9Ah. The head lamp is powered at 60/55W and a horn of 12 V, 30 W, they could have powered the horn a little more. Its suspension is telescopic in the front and Hydraulic in the rear, superbly smooth on the roughest of the terrains. The bike brakes are something on which they can work upon. 260mm dia Disk brakes are installed in the front which is perfect not an issue, but the rear is a drum brake with a 130mm dia, not good enough. I personally could have got smashed into something wasn’t for the maneuverability of the bike. The rear brakes could have been disk brakes as braking from 130kmph to 0kmph can take ages to stop the bike.
It is equipped unidirectional tube tyres- 90/90 x 17” in the front and 13/90 x 15” in the rear. Its rear wheel base is 1475 mm and has a ground clearance of 169mm very low though but gives an amazing feeling. All this gives it a kerb weight of 154.5 kgs.
The Avenger carries upon it a very high style quotient, the chrome plating gives a flamboyant silver look with a beautifully sculpted tank for a special retro feel and that low-slung cruiser look really makes the style statement and makes all the heads turn to you. On the Tank there is a low battery indicator, a high beam indicator and indication for the indicators. Also a good looking fuel gauge and all this is set on a chromed flat form. I give it a 9 on 10 in its styling. One mark deducted as some of the welding joints are not done neatly.
All good things come at a cost, same is the situation here if you are worried about the mileage of your bike, and you might not digest the ride. Riding at nominal speeds gives you an average of 35kmpl in city and 40kmpl on the highway. Even though the digital twin spark ignition technology gives good power and really good pick up and negligible emissions , improving fuel efficiency to a great extent Personally I never ride at nominal speeds hence as I told you I ride between 100kph and 110kmph , and at this speed the mileage will drop down to 30 kmpl. It has a fuel tank capacity of 14 liters and can easily take you 400 kilometers on a full tank. The reserve tank has a capacity of 2 liters, hence gives you a comfortable warning for the refueling.
All said and done the ultimate question is how much does it cost. I must say the Baja Avenger is the cheapest cruiser in the Indian market and I seriously and seriously say that it’s worth it and a very good value for its cost. A brand new Avenger on road will cost you around 85000/- . Financing is also not a problem as the Bajaj guys are quick with their finance schemes and you can get a bike out of the showroom with 45% financing in about 3 hours.
