Dodging Rain In Blackpool

Blog Date - 11 July 2011

The gf and myself went to Coast Rider's Cafe (http://www.coastriderscafe.com/) for breakfast yesterday.  That meant the gf had to be up and ready to go at 0930 because I wanted to be back in time for the British Formula 1 GP at 1300 in the afternoon.  What amazed me is the gf was ready, on time!

To get there on time and before real hunger set in I ran up the motorway.  I've not had a chance to ride the Fazer at speed since I fitted the new 30mm handlebar risers so a motorway run, 2 up should check everything out.  The risers mean the riding position is a tad more upright and for myself a little more comfortable.  The gf reported there's a little less wind on her too, probably due to the fact I'm sat more upright so there's more of me to hide behind.

The weather looked threatening but we had a warm dry run up the M61 and the M55.  The Coast Rider's Cafe was surprisingly busy considering it was only 1015 when we arrived.  We ordered tea and toast for 2 which came to an acceptable £4.00 and we gobbled these up double quick time.  Sorted.

We followed the A roads back through to Preston, which was full of cyclists.  There must have been some event on judging by the marshalls and the number's on the rider's clothing.  There were hundreds, thousands on some roads, causing traffic mayhem but hey, it's all for a good cause probably.  In Preston I decide we had enough time to drop into Preston Harley and look at the bikes.  Ya know what...they got quite a few Harley's in Preston Harley, but not much else.

From my first days of riding I've always dreamed of owning a Harley.  Now that I've finally reached an age where I could just about afford one...I'm not so sure any more.  They are iconic, when non bikers think of a bike they always think Harley.  They look good if you like that sort of thing, they sound good if you like that sort of thing and there's no real substitute, not even the Japanese clones.  But come on...they cost a fortune compared to other marques, don't go so fast, don't handle so well and are owned by poseurs and anyone who doesn't know any better.

Still...I'm tempted.  Luckily for my street cred and my bank balance it's 1130 and it'll take an hour to get back to mother's to watch the GP.  We follow the road back through Penwortham, the edge of Leyland and through Chorley.  All the time the clouds look menacing but the rain stay away.  As we come into Chorley and back towards Horwich the road gets very wet, it's obvious we've missed a recent downpour.  Mother enquires as to how wet we are, she's shocked to hear we're bone dry.  It seems it's been belting it down 15 minutes before our arrival.  It sure makes a change to dodge the rain not catch it.
