A motorcycle parked in front of a tent on a pleasant green campsite

Errrrrm - Devon?

Blog Date - 24 August 2018

I should not go on holiday. I should never ever enjoy myself. Travelling has a massive problem. Adventure has a sinister darkside.

And what prey tell is this evil underbelly of all that I relish? The end. The bit where it's over. The bit where normal life comes flooding back in.

I don't have a bad "normal" life. In fact I am very very lucky if I compare myself to some of my peers and friends. I work 3 days a week because I don't lead an expensive lifestyle. My body is aware it is getting older but overall my health is good. I certainly do not live in the lap of luxury but I have a roof and there's food in the fridge. I have 2 motorcycles as well. What more could a chap want?

Ren's living room is basic, scruffy and very very ordinary
These are the luxurious surroundings from where BAT is created.

Despite all this it is good to get away.

Spain was a fabulous trip so I'm sure you can imagine how it felt when I got back home. No more electrifying gnarly twisting roads, just traffic filled grimy northern streets. No more towering snow-capped mountains, just the local hill with the TV tower on top. No more freedom to explore and look around, just the daily routines of ordinary life.

Oh god I'm depressed.

There is only one cure for the post adventure blues and that is to create the next adventure, no matter what, where and when it is. We cannot afford to return to Spain, nor do we have the remaining holiday days from work. It looks like a week away after the 6 weeks summer holidays is our best bet.

Regular readers will know while most of our trips are camping trips I am by no means a dedicated camper. I would prefer to luxuriate in 5 star hotels but because I'm a lazy sod (see above) I cannot afford to do this.

Sharon outside the wet tent in her waterproofs looking very wet
Sharon clearly demonstrates the joy of camping.

Even cheap B&B's create one additional cost beyond the room for the night - food. When we're in the tent we cook our main meals and make our own tea (tea as in drinking tea as well as our evening meal tea). If we were to "eat out" I'd expect to pay at least £10, more likely £15 to £20 for the 2 of us. Most B&B's don't take too kindly to setting up the petrol powered stove in their rooms and cooking (hence why I am considering hostels as they usually have a kitchen).

So hmmmmm. I fancy a change from the tent but I want to be able to cook. We could rent a cottage? I look online - erm - nope! Not at those prices. What about a static caravan? Aahhh, hmmm, well - it's not as cheap as camping but out of season it is within our budget constraints. We've been in static caravans before, several times and they're usually OK.

After consulting with she who tells me I am in charge but only if she agrees with my decisions we finally settle on Devon. Why Devon? We've been through Devon but we've not had a look around Devon that's why. Further discussions about where in Devon are had and many many caravans on many sites are considered. I keep on suggesting this one or that one until I finally suggest the one Sharon wants and that's the one we book.

Lynmouth harbour, a small harbour surrounded by steep hills
I have been to Lynmouth and that's in Devon?

I am reliably informed that "Brixham" is quite a nice little place. I guess we're going to find out soon enough. Anyone got any useful information about the area?

Your more henpecked than me by the sound of it. I suppose she is a hobbit therefore must have a ring of power to control them all.

Devon will be lovely and parking won't be a problem on a bike.

I don't recognise it as Lynmouth Rod but then I only really stopped off for a few minutes on my way home from Cornwall a few years back. If I manage to corner Sue I'll ask her.
