The Last Days And Words On The Polish Adventure

Ride Date - Mid July 2024

Day 10

Saturday in Ypres.

No riding today, well only to the petrol station. We were awake at 7.45am. It’s going to be a warm one again today. We check the bikes over again ready for the slog home tomorrow. Neither mine nor Pete’s bike have used a drop of oil all the trip. Pretty amazing seeing how they had been ridden for a lot of journey. We pack away the gear we don’t need to save time for tomorrow's getaway.

We spend the day In Ypres just chilling out and relaxing. Obviously we frequent some of the local hostelries and generally watch the world go by. None of us were looking forwards to the ride home tomorrow and the realities that brings with it. But for now we just enjoy the day eating and drinking and relaxing. It’s a day doing nothing that we all needed.

Day 11

How does that song go? "Homeward bound, I wish I was..." Well, we’re all knackered and not looking forwards to todays’ ride. Our port of departure is Dunkirk 45 miles away. Again it’s very hot as we pack our things away. We ride out of the Ypres campsite at exactly 9.00am. An hour later we are at the port and checking in. The mood is a little subdued and it’s very warm. Once we’re over the channel it’s time to open the taps and get going.

Between trucks and vans a collection of riders sat on their bikes on the Dunkirk ferry

There are stops on the way for fuel and a quick bite to eat, but we just keep grinding away at the miles. A couple of energy drinks along the way keep me focussed and motivated. I get home at 8.30pm having done the last 90 miles on me todd.

Total mileage for the last day was 343 miles.

Well was it all worth it? Absolutely it was, we had had a fantastic time. Yes hard going here and there but well worth the effort. I’d definitely like to get back to Poland and spend a lot more time there. From the small bit we saw and experienced it’s given us a taste for further adventures.

All the bikes ran perfectly. There were no mechanical dramas or even a single puncture. As for the SH Mode? What a fantastic machine, no really, it’s a superb bit of kit. It’s fast, frugal and comfy. When I first pondered whether to buy the SH Mode or the SH125i I really struggled to make a decision between the two. The Mode won out mainly because it was a lot lighter than the SH125i, which was more suitable for in the back of the Motorhome. Also it was £900.00 cheaper. In my humble opinion the only benefit of the SH125i over the Mode is the slightly larger fuel tank and larger under seat storage. But let's not forget I have conclusive proof that the Mode is also faster that the SH125i.

Let The Chaos Commence After the where's and why's it's time for a long ride from The Midlands to Belgium. It doesn't all go according to plan but relative to this lot's usual mayhem - it's a good start.
Not Too Much Chaos It's all going far too well - I mean losing half your crew is an everyday occurrence ain't it? Well it is for this lot. There's little mention of beer.
Old Men Crossing Rivers I'm getting rather concerned for Bogger. Not much beer, early to bed, no-one lost, and no mechanical tomfoolery. There's a catch, surely there's a catch
Chaos Towards Colditz More mayhem from a bunch of blokes old enough to know better. Brits used to try and get out of Colditz, these lads are struggling to get in. Fear not - there is beer.
Escape From Colditz To Poland The lads take a brief look around Colditz before making a dash for Poland. There's a handful of shenanigans and guess what - beer.
Poland To Czech With Nitwits After a night in Poland the British Buffoons head into The Czech Republic. They're tired and reading between the lines getting a little grumpy, but there's booze and food so they'll be fine.
Making A Simple Day Out Complicated There's only a short ride into town today for the lads, nice and easy. Even so Bogger manages to get himself stranded through sheer stupidity. At least the food and beer is cheap.
A Long Ride Homewards After another big breakfast there's a long ride ahead for Bogger and pals as they get their teeth into the journey home. Of course there's a disaster, admittedly it's only a minor inconvenience.
An Even Longer Ride Homewards There's more big miles today, and not to anyone's surprise - more chaos. Traffic jams and sheer foolishness means some folks are having a REALLY bad day.
The Last Days And Words On The Polish Adventure It's the final 2 days of the otherwise massive Polish Adventure on small bikes. After all that there's not a lot to say save for a few notes, thoughts and another ridiculously long day on the road.

I'd need a chill out day (or 3) before attempting to ride 343 miles on a 125cc scoot. Remember - Bogger does these things so we don't have to.
