TMQ's Ren Tourer Mk1
Blog Date - 11 April 2013
Those who know me will know I'm tight. They'll also know I'm inclinded to "bodge" things onto the bike to suit my ends, rather than pay for something made for the job. As such my rude, cheeky and inventive friend Tom McQuiggan has created this all new motorcycle for me...
The design starts well. A large picnic basket complete with cutlery and plates await the installation of pot noodles, fray bentos pies, peanut butter sandwiches and strong vimto. The cardboard box panniers provide ample storage space for dirty jeans and second hand boots.
The fitment of a simple shopping basket at the front provides further storage. As you can see Tom has kindly added a few assorted items for my forthcoming tours. I am amazed and indeed bewildered that the front mounted basket is no longer a feature on the majority of moderm machines.
I believe...or hope...Tom's fitment of baby oil and kitchen roll is for the purposes of lubricating the chain, baby oil being much cheaper than chain lube. The magnifying glass is to find my wallet...apparently. He has kindly provided the MCN guide to accomodation for bikers to help me in my travels. I am of course far too tight to pay for a room, preferring to sleep in a tent next to the bike. The umbrella covers the British weather in all it's glory.
For any traveller Satellite Navigation is a must. Of course a Garmin is the preffered option but not at those bleeding prices! Here Tom has solved the issue perfectly. It's easy to view at eye level and provides a little extra wind protection. It is very easy to update without an internet connection and maps are available for all parts of the globe. There's a Saint Christopher attached to the master cylinder to protect my spiritual journey.
So here's the complete bike. As you can see Tom's got it all covered including side impact protection. This is of course a prototype as I have pointed out a few issues to Tom.
1. 250cc motorcycle, uses far too much fuel, we should be looking to the Honda Wave 110 (the modern C90)
2. Pannier boxes still not really as big as they could be.
3. Panniers could be fitted in addition to the Side Impact Protection.
4. No tool tube fitted as per my current Fazer.
5. The bike used here for development is FAR TOO CLEAN!

Many many thanks to Tom for allowing me to use his images and providing myself and many of my friends a good laugh, albeit at my expense. The bike featured is Tom's CB 250 N which he has lovingly restored but is struggling to get the carbs right... If you want to know more about my rude friend then visit http://www.mcqart.com
