Muc-Off Bike Spray Review

Review Date December 2014

By Sharon Parker

Well the last couple of weeks have seen the return of wet weather and as a result a wet and dirty bike. I have noticed on some bike forums that a lot of people are talking about applying ACF50 onto their bikes for winter protection.

I do not have a can of ACF50 but what I do have is a can of Muc-Off Bike Spray which claims to be a high performance water-dispersing "Protect & Lube" Maintenance spray formulated with p.t.f.e. I got this free with another Muc-Off product some time ago but as yet never used it.

I was terrified by the warning it came with as to not get it on your brakes or tyres. I simply did not trust myself as a new biker to even try the stuff so just shoved it to the back of the cupboard.

But my bike is coming up to 14 months old now and this will be its second winter. It will be ridden through all the rain and harsh conditions winter will throw at it so I decided that I should give it a little more protection this year.
So with a little trepidation and after a thorough wash I dusted off the can of Muc-Off Bike Spay and applied it to my bike.

Now my bike has been well looked after. It gets washed and polished on a fairly regular basis. But the black plastic was no longer as shiny as it was when new. It had dulled in places and left small patches of uneven colour. Nothing really noticeable but noticeable to me when I was giving it a good clean.

The bike spray went on nice and easy and just glided over all the parts. I spayed it on direct from the can on most of the bike but I did not want to risk spraying anywhere near the brakes. So I just applied the spay to a cloth and wiped it on any areas I thought were a little to close to the brakes.

All I can say is Wow. I have been impressed with both the Muc-Off Bike Cleaner and the Speed Polish both of which have kept my bike looking shiny over the past 14 months. But the Bike Spray managed to restore the odd patch on the black plastics to their former glory. I could definitely see an extra shine and also feel the light protective film that now covered the entire bike. The bike looked almost brand new again. Ohhh so shiny. So as a super shiner and lube for the bike so far so very very good.

The Bike Spay does not however like ACF50 claim to kill any existing corrosion and prevent new. So whether it is a similar product to ACF50 or not I am not sure. It does however to seem to be on par with the likes of GT85.

The Bike Spray does claims to prevent dirt adhesion between washes. It also claims to protect and preserve your bike. Now the only way I can tell you if that part is true is to go out a few times on the bike in the dirt and rain. So I will go and get on my lovely super shiny and lubed up bike and go and get it all wet and dirty just for you all. I am so good to you.........I will of course report back my findings in a few weeks and then give the Bike Spay a rating.

Well the first weekend of testing the bike faired pretty well. The dirt did not seem to stick as much as usual and no dirt at all stuck to the wheels. The second weekend saw the bike out in some pretty rough weather including slush and snow. It got a good coating of dead leaves, mud, grit and salt.

See what lengths I go to to test things out for you all.

Surprisingly all this muck just slipped off the bike really easy with a light wash down with the hose. No scrubbing was required. Underneath revealed a nice clean bike.

The third weekend saw the bike out in torrential rain with the accompanying mud and grit this throws at the bike. Once again the mud and grit washed off easily with a light hose down but it did not come up super clean. I think one more weekend ride out and the bike will be ready for a good wash.

I am most impressed with this product, previously before applying Muc-Off Bike Spray I would have to thoroughly wash my bike after each outing in the wet winter weather. With the bike spray applied the bike has endured three weekends of testing winter weather and has required nothing more than a quick hose down.

So one application of Muc-Off Bike Spray will not see you through winter without ever having to clean your bike. Well not if you are like me and like to have it look shiny most of the time. But it certainly does reduce the number of times you will need to give your bike a wash and polish. So I will definitely be re-applying the Muc-Off Bike Spray to my bike after its next wash down.

Muc-Off Bike Spray is not the answer to never needing to wash you bike again but it certainly makes the job a lot easier and keeps the times you need to totally scrub the bike down to a minimum. It also helped against all that nasty salt on the roads at this time of year by providing a good barrier.

So far would I say that it lives up to its claims? Yes it does. I like it .... I like it a lot.

Rating 9/10
