End Of The Tax Disc
Blog Date - 12 December 2013
Sharon Parker's tip off...fanx :)
According to all reports the good old tax disc that sits in a rain soaked, rusty, misted up and ugly holder on your bike will soon be a thing of the past. You see the authorities already know from your registration number who you are, who you are insured with, when the vehicle was MOT'd and when it was taxed.
Personally I think it's a good thing. Finding somewhere to place the tax disc holder is a pain in the ass. Then you have to set up the small fragile disc in such a way that it doesn't turn to mush at the first sign of rain. Even with a quality tax disc holder, a laminator and tight nuts the tax disc was still easily pinched. No...good riddance I say.
There are of course a couple of issues. Whilst the authorities can see if you're legal or not Joe Public won't be able to any more. From spotting abandoned cars in your street to wondering if you need to tax your newly purchased second hand vehicle, the tax disc will be missed. I'm hoping, but not assuming, there will be a nice easy website that you can check the tax status of a potential purchase.
Another new thing is that you will be able to pay by direct debit on a monthly basis. There's an extra 5% charge for this privilege so I'll just pay in full. Still I imagine this will be popular as typically the tax comes as the same time as the MOT and insurance which leaves many people stony broke.
All this is supposed to happen next October, 2014. Until then I'll keep the rusty, soggy and mis-mounted tax disc on my bikes.
