Autumnal Leaves On The Road

Blog Date - 16 October 2012

YUK! What a day!  It's absolutely lashing it down outside and the wind is up today.  Oddly enough...there's a certain draw to be out there feeling the wind and the rain whipping my face.  Think I'll go for a short walk soon.  In the meantime this inclement weather is bringing us another seasonal hazard, leaf fall.

There's nothing quite like kicking your way through a huge pile of dry crispy leaves on a chilly autumn morning, but also there's fear in riding down a country lane lined with large deciduous trees that have shed their summer canopy all over the cold, damp road.  With the passing of a few cars the leaves form a slushy, slippery layer that can cause havoc especially in the bends.  There is of course only one solution when the road's like that...slow down!

It's another one of those things we motorcyclists have to deal with as each season rolls by.  It would of course be nice to think a nice man from the council would come and clear them but in these austere time that would be far too costly and plain silly.  Another thing to watch for in the high winds that October often brings are larger parts of the trees falling on the road.  It's not uncommon to find whole branches in your path and if you're particularly unlucky then a whole tree.  Anything that could prove to be a hazard should be reported to the council, possibly even the police.  If you spot something that you can move yourself, safely, then it might be a good idea.  Just don't get run over yourself while trying to make things safer for others.
