Weise Air Spin Motorcycle Trousers - By Ren Withnell

Waterproof pants that are truly waterproof are hard to come by. I’ve tried many varieties and makes of Cordura textile pants and only ever found Hein-Gericke can truly make them watertight. When I mean watertight I mean riding from Manchester to Brighton in the pouring rain for 5 hours and still arriving with dry underpants. The only problem is Hein-Gericke can be expensive.

I work as a computer engineer and quite often use my bike to go to customer’s offices and homes. The problem with waterproof textile trousers is when you arrive on a wet and windy day I will end up sitting on posh chairs with wet pants on, leaving a most unpleasant wet patch for the client. It took a while but I finally came to the conclusion that the traditional waterproof overtrousers would be a better solution, I could remove them upon arrival. Great! Another problem with textile pants is that I would sweat profusely in the warm heated offices. Logically I could wear nice comfy pants under my waterproof overtrousers, but these would not offer any protection in the event of a spill on the road.
Air Spin Pants
I found the Weise Air Spin pants at my local bike shop. They seemed ideal. They comprise of Cordura in the places that matter, those places most likely to be rubbing along the tarmac in the event of a spill. In-between the protected areas are a heavy woven material that is more like a mesh than a sheet. Underneath this protective top layer is a fine layer of comfortable lining. All this allows air to flow around the legs while still offering a greater degree of protection than a pair of jeans. There are also knee and hip pads.

The pants come complete with a breathable waterproof zip in - zip out liner. I’ve never tried the waterproof liner out in serious weather. I guess it would be OK if you are caught in a shower but I doubt it would keep the heavy rain out. I never use the liner, if it’s raining I put my 100% waterproof Hein-Gericke overtrousers on.

The pants are really comfy. I’d say they are actually cooler in hot weather than a pair of jeans! Of course on a cold day they are useless, on their own. Over this winter I’ve been perfectly warm with my overtrousers over the Air Spin pants, even in sub-zero motorway trips. It is really good to be able to say I’ve found a very good solution to the whole comfort and protection issue.

Warm dry days…
Air Spin Pants only

Cold or wet or cold and wet days…
Air Spin Pants
Hein-Gericke waterproof overtrousers

At a clients place…
Remove the overtrousers! Nice and dry and comfy.

Fabulous.

I agree with the idea of protective pants that are comfortable. There's nothing worse that sitting round at a friend's house or in a warm pub with a pair of thick heavy waterproofs on.

Have you tried the padded jeans that are becoming more popular these days? I like the look of them but they don't seem to offer the same level of protection as proper cordura.
