Slippery Roads

Blog Date - 06 May 2011

It's been a great month, April.  Well as far as the weather's been concerned that is.  According to the weather folks it's been the dryest April on records.  Then yesterday it rained.  Not a lot, just a light rain.  This is the worst kind of rain after a  long dry spell.

During the winter months I learnt to forget trying to take corners at any speed.  The roads were wet, icy, dirty and often in poor condition.  So when the weather improved it came as something of a shock to be able to tip the bike into a roundabout without feeling the tyres twitching or feeling like at any moment I'm going to hit the deck.  It's been great!  The only worry has been poor road surfaces as this winters frost and a drop in council funding has taken it's toll.

Then yesterday, light rain.  The problem with light rain is that all the dirt, oil and spilt fuel that has collected over the dry period is lifted and spread across the road.  In heavy rain this is lifted then washed away.  So yesterday my trip to work was treated with caution.  If you adjust your speed accordingly it's possible to ride in most conditions, though I've never figured out ice or snow.  Riding slowly was OK but every now and then on a bend I'd feel a tyre give a warning nudge as it skipped over a patch of oil.

I wonder now what the rest of the summer will bring...is this the end of the dry spell?
