Ride To The East Lancashire Fords 2004 - By Ren Withnell

OK, so it's a bit sad to go looking at streams that cross roads without a bridge...but it's a splendid reason for a ride out! And I kinda like them, they're unusual and more importantly they are normally in rural areas down rural roads, just the kinda place I like to go.

And then there's this fantastic website that will tell you where they all are...go to wetroads.co.uk and have a look. I did, and decided to start with some of the local ones in the East of Lancshire. I was a little apprehensive of mentioning such a geeky and strained excuse for a ride out to the gf, but it seems she shares a passing interest in fords and was quite happy to indulge me - as well as an excuse to get out the house and onto the bike. After feeding our faces we set of on the not too far run to the east end of the M65.

Our first crossing is Childers Green...Our next was Catlow Bottoms where there are 2 very close to each other. All this is set in rolling countryside but oddly you're never far away from the motorway and you can tell from the noise of the traffic. We also tried to get to one at Wycollar but motorised vehicles are not allowed...DOH! We followed on by a trip to Rivington for a warming cup of tea and a chat with the other bikers. A simple, short and very pleasant run.

Ford 2 at Catlow Bottoms with bike, gf and Sun! If you think this is a big crossing then you're wrong, it's just that the gf is very small!!
